For this project I decided to make a small web comic that utilized the 4 lies and a truth in the story and theme of the work. I wasn’t sure how to tackle this project at first so I began roughing up some sketches that held 2 different ideas embedded in positive and negative space. This, however, lacked the craftsman like quality that I enjoy putting together, so I decided to go with an alternative approach. I decided instead I was going to explore meta meanings in comics.
The piece depicts a fantastical setting where a scholar and his teacher sit quietly philosophizing the world. The scholar notices something odd in his world and proceeds to commentate, only to be shot down by his teacher. The comic then pans out to a view of a desk where someone had constructed the comic for an art showing.
A couple major issues of the work is that it relies too heavily on text. Secondly, there are issues with the presentation. I should’ve printed out the comics individually to present to the class to be its own personal experience. Unfortunately I only thought of doing this as I presented the piece. Lastly there really was no conceptual foundation behind the work. I will need to work on expanding a bit of my conceptual design to see if I can include that in future pieces.
I really enjoyed making this piece, though it didn’t get the kind of reception I was hoping for. I was glad people enjoyed the drawings and such but I believe I still have a ways to go before making something amazing.
